Statement

I am a landscape artist mainly working in oil or watercolour. After training in the arts (in ceramics and painting) I taught for several years, then gained further qualifications to change careers. I have painted all my life, entering several exhibitions, and finally came 'home' to Whitby to paint full time. I am a member of Whitby Art Society and exhibit with them, as well as having had several successful exhibitions at 'The Inspired By..….' Galleries in Danby. My work has previously  shown in the Station Gallery Richmond, Art Bank Saltburn, The Coast Gallery Cloughton), The Zillah Bell Gallery in Thirsk and, with friends, at Nunnington Hall as a commission by the National Trust.

Sue's home and workshop is in the Whitby area where members of her family have lived for several generations. After training in the Arts, she taught and then, as her family grew up, gained further degrees, qualifying as an architectural historian. During this time, she worked in the museum and arts sector and ran an historic house museum.  In her last career, she worked with her husband as his associate, and then as principal of their historic building consultancy. Throughout her several careers she painted and exhibited whenever and wherever she could, but finally gave up the 'day job' to come home to Whitby and paint full time.

Although she enjoys sketching and painting in other European countries, it is the North Yorks Moors, the villages and the coastal areas, with their pure and glorious light that are her main inspiration.
