Bruce Mulcahy

Bruce was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

He was interested in art from early age and eventually this led to him studying  for a degree in Fine Art at Newcastle University, graduating in 1978. Several paintings were sold at his Degree Show and he received his first commissions shortly afterwards, which encouraged him to begin painting full time the following year.

It was whilst at Newcastle that Bruce began to paint landscapes and seascapes on the spot, using mainly oil or gouache, a practice he still continues. Working outdoors has practical difficulties, of course, - not least those caused by the weather - but he tries to cope with those as well as he can in order to have the chance to react directly to the colours, light and textures of the subject.

Bruce has exhibited in many galleries across the country including Mall Galleries, London; Manchester Academy of Fine Arts; Leeds City Art Gallery and he shows work on an ongoing basis at Myton Gallery, Hull and Staithes Gallery.

At Staithes he tutors two residential painting weekends organised by the gallery as part of their Staithes Art School. Also, through the year, he travels to many art groups and societies giving painting demonstrations and workshops, as well as running his own weekly art classes.

In 2007 Bruce was elected a full member of The Royal Society of Marine Artists (later serving as RSMA Hon Treasurer 2014-2019) and is a member of several other art societies in the North of England.

His work is in many private collections in the UK and in 14 other countries, to date, including France, New Zealand and Canada.
