I have always had a passion for drawing and painting. Perhaps even more than this I am compelled by some inner force to somehow convey our three dimensional world into a believable two dimensional form, which if all the vital ingredients of inspiration, skill and that indefinable something are present may lead to a successful result.
The overwhelming inspiration for my work is light. I especially love the challenge of chasing this changeling and trying to express its ephemerally through paint. My aim is to capture a moment which may never exist in quite the same form again. A painting either ‘sinks or swims’ at its first execution - it rarely gets a second chance!
To achieve this I prefer to work directly in front of the subject for the shortest time needed to catch this elusive quality. The immediacy of the pastel medium suits this purpose for me. My most recent work is involved with exploring colour by building up layers of primary colour, rather than relying on ready made blends. I am also experimenting with the rich and varied effects that can be created through mixed media.

Hanlon Niamh Member 2008 - Resigned 2021
When possible Niamh paints and sketches outdoors in the coastal area around Staithes and Whitby and on the Yorkshire Moors. She has also travelled and painted in Ireland, New Zealand and Cyprus. She enjoys the excitement of watercolour with its risks and dangers and the extent to which it allows for experimentation. Her work demonstrates a love of wet into wet washes onto which she imposes detail with line and tonal value. She has been influenced by the Impressionists, the Staithes Group, Chinese brush water-colourists and by English Water-colourists past and present.
She is a member of Whitby Art Society.

Ould Marshall Resigned 2022
Marshall Ould is a self taught artist who has developed his own style in both oil and watercolour through a lifelong love of painting. With encouragement from fellow artist Geoff Birks he had his first exhibition in his Leeds Studio in 1990. He gave up his job in the printing industry where he had been involved in reproducing fine art work to become a full time artist in 1998.
He has painted in many different locations at home and abroad with light and atmosphere always being a source of inspiration. He enjoys travelling, with a large part of his recent work featuring subjects produced on painting holidays in the Far East.
Marshall now lives and works at Runswick Bay, and has paintings exhibited at the Staithes Gallery. Website

Brindley Robert Elected 2010 - Resigned 2020
Robert is a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Marine Artists (R.S.M.A.). His work can be seen at the Mall Galleries, London, at their annual exhibition and with other members throughout the country, in marine related shows.
He has shown and sold works in London at the Mall Galleries, with the Royal Society of Marine Artists (R.S.M.A.), the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (R.O.I.)
In 1993 Robert exhibited for the first time with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and in November 1997 he was elected a member and was subsequently featured on Tyne Tees Television's "A Day In The Life Of ..." series.
It has been primarily because of this exclusive membership that Robert's work has come to the attention of some prominent galleries, where his work hangs with many of the country's leading artists, which should further enhance his already established reputation.
Born in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire in 1949, Robert worked in the Structural Engineering field as a Computer Aided Design Manager until 1992 when he moved to Whitby, North Yorkshire and became a full time painter.
Working in Watercolour, Oil, and Pastels, Robert's main inspiration is the challenge of capturing light and atmosphere in a modern impressionistic style.
He paints, mainly landscape and coastal scenery, around his home in North Yorkshire, or on painting trips including ,Cornwall, the South Coast, Wales, Scotland and further a field in Venice, Holland, France, Corfu, India or anywhere where there is an opportunity to portray nature and her moods.
Robert’s first book, ‘Painting Boats & Coastal Scenery’ explains many aspects of painting the coast, from creeks and tidal rivers to bustling beach scenes, boats and harbours, with a strong emphasis on light, mood and atmosphere. Using Watercolour, Oil and Pastel, it looks in detail at the painting process and encourages both novice and experienced artists, to try & capture the drama and beauty of the coastline.
The book demonstrates the importance of light and how to create harmony, tone and colour, with emphasis on drawing, sketching and plein-air painting. There are many 'Step by Step' demonstrations with instruction on painting water and skies, as well as coastal scenes & advice on painting trips in Britain & abroad.
Listed in the current addition of 'Who's Who in Art' Robert’s work is featured in many books & other publications, including ‘How to paint Watercolour Landscapes’. The Artist & Illustrator, The Artist and Yorkshire Life & the Dalesman.
Robert gives tuition in Watercolour, Oil & Pastel to groups of Art Society students & private tuition at his Home Studio in Sleights.

In 1995, Rob Shaw moved to the tiny isolated fishing village of Staithes in North Yorkshire and began to sketch and paint whilst studying for his degree in Architecture and Design at Teeside University. In 1997 he gained a First Class (hons) and began a 10 year career in this chosen field while at the same time, painting and exhibiting at various galleries throughout the country.
In 2006 he left his position as a Design Office Manager, at that time living in Bath and choose to return to Staithes to paint full time. Since 2006 he has had many group shows and has also had very successful solo shows. His work and themes are constantly changing, from depicting the small fishing village where he lives and the large breakwaters that protect it, through to Georgian Spa towns such as Bath and Harrogate.
His latest works have been a series of large scale London cityscapes painted in oil on canvass board. The first one of these was exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show 2012, and was sold on the opening day to a member of Morrisons family. In 2012 his work was also accepted for the Lynn Painter Stainer Exhibition at the Mall Galleries. In 2013 his work was accepted at the Royal Academy Summer Show.
He continues to paint London, however he is also painting a series of Northern Cityscapes and has recently been invited over to Singapore and Tokyo to undertake a set of paintings there.
In 2008, he was interviewed by John Sargeant for The One Show on BBC1.
In 2013 he was interviewed by Matt Baker for `Countryfile` on BBC1.
In 2013 he was invited into the Fylingdales Group of Artists as a full member.
Robert Shaw was born in Derbyshire in 1974 and gained a BA (hons) first class degree in Interior Architecture and Design in 1997. In 1995 he spent a year out between Universities in the coastal village of Staithes, North Yorkshire where he helped his parents to renovate a cottage and began to paint. This energetic style which was used to create images of the local village surrounded by the overbearing North Sea and lashed by the winds gained interest with both locals and tourists alike.
He had moved around the country with his former profession for ten years, though in 2006 he decided to paint full time and eventually settled in a house in Staithes with a studio overlooking the sea.
During 2008, he travelled in Europe, getting inspiration for his next two years projects which will include many European cityscapes. He hopes to bring his love of Architecture and detail to meet up with his erratic use of colour to create new visions of these well visited places. His work has been sought after and collected both here and abroad, with work travelling as far as Australia and Dubai.
During 2008, he was also interviewed by John Sargeant for a national BBC program called The One Show.

Although I work in a variety of media I find that soft pastels complement my visual concerns with how surfaces, shapes and forms are affected by the intervention of light and other natural occurrences. I also combine acrylics and oils with printmaking processes to develop a tactile response to my chosen subjects. These are often studio still life arrangements in which the illumination plays an important part and I spend much time on getting this right before starting to paint. However I also find the quality of light and subjects that reveal themselves in coastal areas generate a parallel strand in my current work beyond the confines of the studio. The elevated or unfamiliar viewpoints and strong side lighting that I favour for the still lifes are also to be found on the sea shore and harbour sides, in washed up trawler line, lobster pots and lichen encrusted walls.
In my paintings I am concerned with more than mere replication of objects. I also have an intellectual and emotional response to how and where I see them. A further subtext in my work is a fascination with why the elements of a still life come together and I seek to give objects a heightened presence and element of mystery which transcends realism. I want my paintings to represent the complicated process of seeing as well, not just the objects themselves. In this way they become in their turn the object.
I am currently engaged with a new body of work in preparation for future exhibitions. My concerns remain the same although I am now including more landscapes and seascapes from my visits to northern parts of the UK, in particular the Shetland Isles.
